La Voile France, France 2000
Description by Foster & Partners
‘La Voile’, a private villa on the French Riviera, takes its name from the sail of a boat; its minimal design shares a sail’s clarity of form and function, as well as a direct connection with the sea and weather. The structure of the existing house has been opened up vertically to spectacular views framing the horizon, blurring the boundary between inside and out
The heroic scale of the central space is emphasised by a mudwork by Richard Long on the double-height wall. Balconies rise up through the social heart of the villa like terraces and incorporate a library, seating and dining areas, while the use of white, reflective materials helps to animate the space with changing patterns of sunlight.
