Dubrovnik/House U by 3LHD

In order to build a house the client has bought the last empty plot at the Ploče quarter in Dubrovnik. The steep site is of irregular shape, and it was divided with a road by the change in land zoning plans. The house is set on top of the plot with a wonderful view of the Old City and Lokrum Island, while the lower part is intended for a great and lush garden.
The project task was to design a house for parents and their adult children with their families. Therefore the plot contains two objects. One, a two storey object for parents, and the other, made up of two apartments for the children and their families. In this way, three residential units were formed. A shared outdoor space is inserted between the two houses – a terrace designed for socializing and family gatherings that connects instead of separating them. The pool is in front of the parents house, sunken under the terrace level so it does not block the view from the living room. The garage spaces are located right next to the road and hidden from view by the slope of the plot.
One of the main house features is the white facade constructed from local stone from the quarry Visočani, cut into 8x120cm “sections”. The façade whiteness is underlined by slits of large continuous glass which provide wonderful views of the city to all living areas and bedrooms, while the bathrooms and kitchen are located in the interior of the house. The only one that deviates from this rule is the parents’ luxurious bathroom on the first floor which also overlooks the city and Lokrum through a large glass wall. The smaller house is pulled out towards the garden area to allow greater privacy, and the children?s house façade is broken to ensure more privacy to the sleeping and living areas.
A simple combination of materials is complemented by natural wood pergola beams connecting the two houses.  The natural wood is also used as a floor covering and for the garage door panels. 3LHD is a collaborative architectural studio, particularly interested in the integration of architecture, art and (urban) landscape, an approach which has resulted in a series of projects and realizations in Croatia and abroad. 3LHD has an integrative approach to projects and believes that in addition to functional, architecture must respond to many other issues. Basic principles of the practice are woven into the modernity of the early 21st century.

Our design approach is each time with different realities, and with many different parameters that we give ourselves and which are given to us, it is integral, analytical and iterative. It is based on modification of opinions of different people, that we seek to bring into production, these are various specialists, experts in various areas and with them we try to achieve highest quality. This is where our approach is like that of a producer and we often bring ourselves in the role of a director or a DJ who performs the best editing. In such a way we investigate the most appropriate concept and try to create new value. 3LHD is an architecture studio founded by four partners – Saša Begović (born 1967 in Bjelovar), Marko Dabrović (born 1969 in Dubrovnik), Tanja Grozdanić Begović (born 1968 in Zagreb) and Silvije Novak (born 1971 in Rijeka). 3LHD was founded in 1994 when three of the four partners were still students on the Architecture faculty in Zagreb, in an atmosphere of Croatia’s political and economic transition. The studio was formed on the basis of team work and atmosphere. After years of successful business, 3LHD has appointed a new partner in 2016, Paula Kukuljica (born 1976 in Oakville, Kanada).
All of the partners are graduates from Architectural Faculty, University of Zagreb, Croatia.
3LHD partners have been visiting lecturers on institutions all over the world and currently they are teachers on Architectural Faculties, University of Zagreb and Split, Croatia.

Dune House by Fearon Hay Architects

Fearon Hay Architects have designed a vacation home that integrates into the landscape. The 2014 World Architecture Festival (Villa Category) winner is located on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, an hour drive north of Auckland. The spectacular site sits within a natural dune zone adjacent a long white sand beach, which only makes it a natural source of inspiration for the architecture of the residence.

The vacation home was designed for a couple with a deep love for outdoor beach environment, water sports and their three dogs. To keep in tune with their active lifestyle, the design had to incorporate easy access to a board from the basement surf locker, outdoor showers and a sense of openness and connection to the dune environment and beach views.

The house was nested into the dunes with the lower level almost completely hidden by its sunken integration into the landscape. A central open plan living space sits between a terrace and protected courtyard. The terrace opens to the beach while the courtyard creates privacy and a sense of sanctuary to the street behind. The courtyard’s protection is created by a glass veil that obscures the lines of sight but is still able to offer light and awareness of the western aspect.

The interior of the residence draws inspiration from the ever-changing natural coastline. The design incorporates a refined material palette that offers a sense of comfort, calm and quiet. All materials have been carefully selected to add a level of sophistication without distracting from the natural and built environment. The grey plastered walls and travertine floors give a sense of rawness, and contrast nicely against the surreal landscape seen through the full height windows.

Details of electropolished stainless metalwork and inlaid surfaces of silver travertine add to the elegant interior. The materiality for the kitchen & scullery is a response to a desire for richness in this restrained palette that would still maintain this sense of rawness – something natural but something that would counter the soft grey hues of concrete and plaster. 0e0071a8-ab56-4716-b99a-8f36389e9bb1.jpgFour consecutive corner apartments in a building in the Tsamert Complex in Tel Aviv have been combined into one spacious apartment. The interior design is simple and consists of two public levels that also contain two private levels.

The apartment’s entrance is through the lower level, which contains the kitchen, dining area and a large double sized living area. The entire level is also surrounded by a balcony. In a similar fashion the penthouse floor is designed as an upper living area with a large salon overlooking the balcony and a swimming pool and a kitchen and bathrooms. The effect is of two different and separate living levels that make possible a range of social activities and interactions at one and the same time.

Between the two public spaces, we find the private areas – bedrooms and work areas that also have their own, private outside spaces.

The physical connection between the spaces is made possible by the use of elevators and stairs. These are designed as a pathway that looks out over the seemingly ever-changing design – a topological framework in white that seems to rise and fall, following and enveloping the internal walls, floors and ceiling bringing together the facets of the prism into a deceptive and gravity free space composed of patches of white and shade. A patchwork of clearly defined lines, like a plant creeping up a clear trellis.

The envelope’s panels are emphasized to bring out the white from its neutral, flat boundaries into the space’s monolithic effect – like a piece of sculpture that catches and presents the space. This nullifies the need for any additional design elements other than those that light and accompany the space. These include the lighting elements, which provide natural light, and the staircases, also designed as a white prism that is both flat and expanded. The topographical white is further enhanced by the large, orthogonal glass walls that cast a myriad rays of light differing in their shade and brightness.

Next to them, we find a wall of linear translucent glass panels that act as a Japanese rice paper room divider that identifies the space without cutting it off from the totality. The use of glass also adds and emphasizes the white, creeping framework and adds an additional dynamic created by the people moving through the space. In a similar fashion movement and views in the space are also emphasized by the work areas and sitting areas that are placed by the stairways as terraces that both observe and are observed.

The careful selection of materials and hues is also evident in the apartment’s other elements such as the floors and the furniture – monochromatic, reserved and deep – that surprise the viewer as they envelope the light and the brightness. The space is full of fragments of naturally appearing light and shade in yellow and grey hues that appear as a compact, stable and uniform unit. Despite it being almost completely exposed on all its sides, the invasion of the outside urban environment is seen in a restrained, organic and non-threatening fashion.

Pitsou Kedem Architects Studio

Pitsou Kedem Architects Studio opened in 2000 and today consists of 11 architects. The studio is responsible for the design and planning of many projects in Israel and lately, also in Europe.
Pitsou Kedem set up the studio after finishing his studies at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA). The studio’s design language and concept is founded on the modernist style and his work encompasses the values and principles of the period as well as the design philosophies of the modernist movement.

During its formative years, the studio was involved in a constant dialogue with the fundamental principles of minimalism: reduction and moderation, clean lines for each element, separation of structural materials as part of the process designed to avoid the irrelevant in order to emphasize the significant and refining and seeking out the essence of the space.

Together, all these elements lead to a strong architectural concept that is uncompromising in its search for the absolute truth, in its pursuit for purity of form and shape and in its goal of achieving a spatial perception of comfort and tranquility.
This constant quest for simplicity leads to sophisticated and precise elements which , in turn, contributes to their uniqueness.

The majority of the studio’s projects can be characterized by simple geometric, rectangular and recurring shapes that impart an exact and interconnecting look to the structure and its spaces.
Structural facades are uniform, mono-chromatic, devoid of all decoration and provide a feeling of being almost monumental in nature. By using this architectural and design language, we attempt to bring order to urban chaos, For the past years, the studio has been searching for new materials, for a fresher approach that will allow us to enter new territory and step outside of recognized and boundaries. After years of simplifying materials to the extent avoiding all distractions that created those pure moments when “emptiness” disappeared and the individual sees and feels all that they failed to see and feel before, we began to add layers of materials and spatial layers. Inevitably, these layers created increasingly ambiguous and illusory spaces within the structure, layers that, in turn, created a greater sense of curiosity.
A great deal of effort was used in our research for new materials, and in particular, for materials to be used for building external structures and walls. In its ongoing search to deepen and expand its architectural and design language and to add new contentment, the studio has, over the past few years, been working with contrasting materials such as weathered steel and exposed concrete on the one hand and carbon and other new and innovative materials taken from the world of industrial technology on the other. The combination of different materials and different architectural and design languages and even, on occasion, different schools of design, created, in many projects, a surprising and dramatic tension.

The studio designs projects covering a wide range of sizes and complexity. From the interior design of restaurants, stores and living spaces to the design of private residences – usually those spreading over very large plots – and recently, hotels and residential complexes.
In all of our projects we consult closely with the client and “brainstorm” in our efforts to discover the story, the concept, that flash of inspiration that will lead to the project’s design. The nucleus of an idea, leads to the development of the design language and concept which then leads to the development of spaces which serve the users – whilst all the time, placing an emphasis on the context and the integration of the building into the urban fabric.
The studio has, over the years, been awarded many prizes including, for the past seven years, the Israeli Design Award. Our designs have been showcased in many professional journals and magazines around the world as well as on leading architectural web sites.
Pitsou Kedem has mentored graduation projects for the Faculty of Architecture at the Technion, Israel and lectures regularly at all of Israel’s architectural faculties.

Rosen Penthouse by Eleven-Studio

26985e_64191d9f15454a68b0c4179c6e5da1c7The renovation of this 80-sqm-apartment located on the last floor of a traditional early ‘900 English villa has used a very linear design as a frame for an eclectic mix of modern, ancient and ethnic details.

 The designers found a space that had been strongly transformed during the last renovation made in the 80’s. Revisiting the stylistic choices made in order to lighten and de-materialize the existing structure, they tried to create back a dialogue with the traditional architecture.

The massive wood stair has been replaced by a very linear white resin structure which gives back fluidity to the space, connecting the ground floor to the first floor and creating a much more dynamic space.

The floor of the wide common area has been entirely covered with a strong texture parquet while the room is marked by light play which incorporates the kitchen while subdividing functional areas.

 Some ethnic details, remembering the origin of the owner, create colorful touches while the old iron heaters strengthen the personality of this penthouse.

The arrangement of lights, mirrors and furnitures also permits to enjoy the wonderful view on the coast from every position in the apartment.

 Finally the first floor is characterized by very intimate and warm rooms. The bathroom more precisely has been completely realized with very dark colors while the led lighting follows the emotional feature that has led this entire project.

The Ibiza Campo house by Standard Studio

On a mountain in the rugged north of Ibiza, lies this beautiful casita. What formerly served as stables and storage, is now transformed into a contemporary dream house. The owners developed this 200 year old finca into their showroom and guesthouse.

To keep the character of the original building, basic materials are used. The beautiful authentic ‘sabina beams’ have been preserved, just like the original ancient stone walls in the kitchen and bathroom. The architects only used materials that were used traditionally on the island, like the iroko window frames, concrete and white chalk plastered stone walls.

The building had been unused for years, and was in very poor condition. Therefore only the walls, and parts of the roof could remain. Electricity, water and sewage were not present, the architects had to add all these things to make it work as a contemporary home. Water comes from a private well and there are solar panels installed for hot water, floor heating and electricity. The cottage is consequently completely independent of the grid operation and is thus self-sustainable.

The result is a fantastic contemporary residence where contrast plays a big role; old and new, sleek and rustic, light and dark. At the same time there’s a certain balance as well, and everywhere you look something is happening. With an incredible view from the mountain, a yoga platform above the house and many fruit trees and a vegetable garden, this is truly a piece of paradise. Here you really get into another world and you can relax and unwind. The nice thing is that everything is for sale, so except the house itself, you can take everything home!

Renovation and expansion of a ‘Saracen trullo’ in Ostuni, Italy by Luca Zanaroli Architetto

Extension of a small Saracen trullo, a typical rural building found in the Ostuni region of Italy, with an adjacent structure, a lamia, which remained only part of the perimeter walls. The intention was not only to recover the existing buildings, but also take advantage of the possibility of creating an extension so as to triple the existing surface (originally less than 40 square meters) to establish at least four bedrooms. Slightly recessed and lowered, the new volumes hinge the nearby structures while voids and large windows open the interior to daylight and the outdoors. continuity between the materials and colors of surfaces smooth the transitions between the old and new. Inside, mortar coats floors and walls to unify the interior and reflect the southern daylight that enters. minimal furniture and locally crafted objects compliment the qualities of the rustic atmosphere.


Luca Zanaroli “The intention was to prevent the added building from somehow overwhelming and having a negative impact on the existing structure, whose shape and relationship with the surrounding space, I wanted to keep intact, well-defined and recognizable. I wanted to avoid, as far as possible, upsetting the established balance between voids and fills, between mass and air that had been created and settled in time. In other words, the new structure was not intended to “choke” the old one. Quite the contrary, by connecting to it, it was to be on the one hand its organic completion and on the other, its “means of contrast”. By altering the contrast between the existing structure and its surroundings, I wanted to bring out those details that otherwise would not have been appreciated or difficult to read. I, therefore, looked for a language as neutral and straightforward as possible, although quite different, to define the new volumes. As a “hinge” between the old and the new building, I used a building with an elementary shape, slightly withdrawn and lowered, which would allow the ancient stones of the wall on which the new building is grafted to “breathe”, by using large voids and large openings. While the deliberate contrast visually and stylistically breaks with the past, the homogeneity and continuity of materials and colours of the internal and external surfaces, and paths make the space fluid and enhances the transitions between the different bodies, styles and languages.”

For me beauty lies in simplicity and reduction.

This project is an attempt to reinterpret the old theme of mansion and adjust it to contemporary aesthetical and functional needs. Design’s ambition was to create house that, while being luxurious, visually pleasing and great to live in, will be also devoid of all the things that are unnecessary. House that is not trying to follow passing fashion, but rather strives to create clear and solid presence in the landscape by using very simple means.maciej_grelewicz-modern_mansion_7Externally the mansion has an appearance of a simple, white, stone block, perforated by big openings. House has a solid, robust presence emphasizing ambition to create lasting, durable piece of architecture. This aspiration is also visible in the choice of materials – all facades are clad with big panels of white marble. We pursue qualities that are timeless: simplicity, good proportions and attention to detail. Vitruvius, in his famous ‘The Ten Books on Architecture’, defined qualities that good architecture should posses: durability, functionality and beauty (‘firmitas, utilitas, venustas’) – we believe those values are as important today as they were two thousand years ago. We consciously aim for simplicity in our proposals. We don’t do it out of modesty or restraint – on the contrary, we believe that simple and honest building is stronger than the one that shouts and desperately seeks for attention.

Considering scarcity of resources, human influence on climate change and very high carbon footprint of building industry, we believe that it is essential to treat sustainability as integral part of design thinking. We implement this approach at the very beginning of design process, always starting with careful analysis of the plot to find the best possible building’s orientation and placement of openings. Sun is the cheapest and most pleasant radiator – we aim at making the best use of it, to limit dependence on costly external heating and cooling systems.

BURRAN AVE | MOSMAN by Corben Architects

Set on a battle-axe block above Balmoral Beach adjacent to a nature reserve, this three level house is designed to enjoy the breathtaking water views from every level. The site required neighbour negotiations early in the design process resulting in a mutually agreed building envelope that satisfied Council’s view sharing policy, ending in a speedy DA approval.

The journey from the street begins down a gentle stair in the landscaped access handle shared with the driveway, past a double garage door integrated with wall cladding leading to a custom finished front door. The entry on middle level welcomes one with its light filled double height volume and a striking off-form concrete wall with a timber clad cantilevered stair.

The living space beyond, with its centrepiece of beautifully crafted marble kitchen island, is large and expansive yet articulated to provide intimate spaces and framing the panoramic water view. The upper level consists of the main bedrooms with the private master suite and the ensuite commanding the unencumbered sweeping water views.

The lower level consists of guest bedrooms and Rumpus Room that combines with undercover BBQ terrace and swimming pool to provide a private sanctuary with a tranquil resort feel. In contrast to the geometric building, the landscaping consists of a series of free-form terraces working with the site contours and integrating natural features.

Extensive native planting is used to complement the adjacent nature reserve and integrate with its natural context. The project has also been an excellent example of a successful and trusting client-architect–builder partnership resulting in a detailed contemporary residence from the initial purchase to completion in approximately two years.

Solstice Luxury Suites by Dimitra Rafa Architect

Oia / Santorini / Grèce / 2016

img_2_The complex Solstice Luxury Suites is located in Oia village on the island of Santorini. It consists of small cave like structures and one aboveground studio with courtyards that are designed to follow the natural slope of the landscape.

The outdoor spaces offer relaxation areas that allow an ample view so that the visitor becomes one with the surroundings of this unique landscape. The construction began on January 2016 and ended in June 2016. The architectural practice Dimitra Rafa dealt with the architectural study, the interior design, the design of custom furniture and custom lighting, as well as the construction supervision of all spaces.

The renovation design intents to revitalize the existing shell, highlighting the traditional morphological elements of the Cycladic architecture with a modern architectural language. This dialogue between old and new is encountered with the juxtaposition of traditional materials and techniques such as cement screed with new materials such as ceramic patterned tiles. The screed is mainly white, respecting the island’s characteristic identity and also black in the outdoor spaces, referencing the color of the volcano’s rock formations.

The presence of stone is also a reference to the volcano and can be found on the interiors as a single architectural element or as the main construction material of the retaining walls. On the interior, the aim is to create a unique but flowing atmosphere in each room, which is achieved through the design of custom made elements. Every piece of furniture is either custom made or selected to serve this purpose. A characteristic example are the perforated wooden panels in the shower that allow light to create unique patterns during each time of day.

The same principles are followed in the design of the courtyards, where the custom white wood pergolas are skewed in order the follow the landscape’s contour lines. The pergolas are clad in white wood, canes and blue rope, a clear reference to the Aegean blue sea. The way of living in each room also varies depending on the visitor, as the built-in benches and beds create a free environment. In addition, the complex has a very low environmental footprint due to the use of heat pumps for the operation of the jacuzzis.

The intention is to create an overall experience, where the visitor will feel a familiar relationship with the space based on his own personal interpretation.

Bredeney House by Alexander Brenner Architects

Essen / Allemagne / 2015

0f5c831e-ab9e-4fff-b5f4-e87c01b9aa43The Brucker-Holt District in Essen was constructed in its present form n the 1960s. On the clearing formerly used for agriculture, flat, sedate villas were constructed on extensive properties in those days and were characterised by one conspicuous feature: they all have generous front gardens without any encircling hedges or fences. Only later, the more than head-high evergreen hedges and fence systems were added.

The Bredeney House with its generous driveway in an open, semi-public front garden, however, takes reference from the partly still existing 1960s houses. A separation from the public space is only achieved by the level of the house itself.

As regards its modesty, the large, lying building is to a greater extent also oriented by earlier buildings in this quarter. It rather sees itself as a manifesto against the much too extensive arbitrariness of today’s »villa architecture«. The house would like to be a sedate and timeless urban component, which appears in full sunshine as well as under the moon’s blue clarity as if it has always been there.

The interior programme of the residence follows the wishes expressed by the residents and naturally rests on the existing topography. A hall connects the 4-metre high ground level accommodating the kitchen, the dining and living areas to the wing with private rooms. The parents’ area is located half a storey above the living level, whereas the children’s realm and the guestrooms are situated half a level in the opposite direction.

All occupied rooms open up towards the garden via their inner corner, which is in the eastern section crossed by an oblong terrace. A simple cubic garden pavilion with transparent sides facing the house and the garden acts as a terminus of the terrace and adds an architectural corner point to the outdoor area.
