A departure from the repetitious ‘garage and driveway – build to the boundaries – feeling of confined living’  scenario, Jamison Architects were successful in negotiating with local council a duplex design that challenged the town planning parameters for the sake of better design. Negotiations with council enabled better streetscape appeal for the clients and the neighbourhood, and importantly better solar aspect and privacy for the duplexes. Ultimately these creative design solutions have resulted in more liveable and enjoyable spaces for the clients who now call this “home”. A rich palette of finishes and textural qualities unifies the design both inside and out. Most noticeable is the black ash stained timber cladding which conceals the garage doors and runs internally down one side of the hallway which is punctuated with recessed joinery, seating and the main staircase. It draws one through the home leading them to the bright, light filled living spaces and tranquil rear sanctuary complete with garden, alfresco entertaining space and pool. ‘Masuto’ enjoys the benefits of passive solar design including energy efficient natural lighting, cross-ventilation, heating and cooling with a wonderful connection to the outdoor landscape.  It is functional, sophisticated, efficient in its use of space and a joy to live in.
